Norovirus problem in England increases (update)

Almost 900,000 people (increased from previous estimates of 700,000) in England alone have been infected with norovirus this winter. The situation is described as the worst start to the norovirus season on record. More than 5,000 workers in the National Health Service are reportedly calling in sick every day. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to norovirus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid contaminated food and water. Travellers should be aware that this group of viruses may persist for some time on inanimate objects such as banisters, door knobs and other surfaces touched by ill persons. Good personal hygiene, especially hand washing, helps to reduce the risk of exposure and infection.
