Northern Mali controlled by rebel extremists

In fierce fighting in northern Mali, Islamist rebels drove the Mailian army out of the town of Konna today. The al Qaeda-linked group controls the northern two-thirds of the country and have imposed Sharia law, thereby justifying the destruction of historic buildings and shrines.

Many countries advise their citizens to avoid all travel to Mali due to armed conflict, famine, and an unstable government. Travellers should monitor news and reports and consult their embassy if planning any travel to Mali in the coming year.
