Number of Ebola virus cases and deaths increase in Democratic Republic of the Congo

The total number of cases of Ebola haemorrhagic fever have increased from 10 to 15 with 10 deaths (3 in health care workers who cared for ill persons). Cases and deaths have occurred in 3 health zones: Isiro (12 cases and 8 deaths); Pawa (2 cases and 1 death); and Dungu (1 death).

Any travellers in this area should avoid any direct contact with anyone suspected to have this infection since it is highly contagious and lethal. Transmission often occurs during burial rituals for deceased patients, close physical contact with infected persons and their body fluids, during sexual contact or within hospitals through contact with blood and body fluids of infected persons.
