Number of possible exposures to hantavirus in Yosemite National Park increases to 22,000 (update)

A total of 8 cases and three deaths due to hantavirus pulmonary infection have been reported following exposure to this virus while staying in tent cabins at Curry Village in Yosemite National Park. Approximately 22,000 people have been potentially exposed, and 2,500 of these reside outside the USA. Two suspected cases are being tested in France. Since the incubation period for this infection can be quite long (up to 60 days), more cases may be identified in the coming weeks.

Travellers who stayed at Curry Village during teh exposure period (July-August) before the Village was closed and who develop respiratory symptoms should seek medical care as soon as possible.

Visit our Health Library for more information on exposure to and the prevention of Hanta Virus.
