Ongoing protests in Beirut, Lebanon

For several days, thousands have been protesting planned tax increases in Beirut. Most protests are in the area of Riad el-Solh square, government headquarters and parliament building.

Travellers should be aware of the political tensions over tax increases and concern about spending which protesters blame on government corruption. Although the protests have been peaceful overall, protests can quickly and unexpectedly escalate and become violent. To minimize safety risk, avoid protests, rallies and large public gatherings.
