Outbreak of measles in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia

For the first time since 2006, there are reports of measles (5 cases) during the 1st 2 weeks of September in the Chelyabinsk Oblast.

Measles is not an innocuous disease. In a current outbreak in the Netherlands, among the 1,266 cases, there have been 90 cases of pneumonia, 1 case of encephalitis (brain inflammation), and 82 hospital admissions.

Travellers are reminded that outbreaks of the highly contagious measles virus can occur anywhere in the world at any time.
