Outbreak of new violence in Ukraine

Violence erupted late yesterday when Ukrainian police and protesters clashed in Kiev. Three men were sentenced to a six-year jail term for attempting to destroy a statue of Lenin. Supporters, gathered outside the court, to try to block police vehicles from taking the men out of the court building. Police responded violently with batons and spray. Tensions are high in the Ukraine and travellers should avoid the vicinity of all public gatherings and demonstrations.
