Outbreak of Oroya fever in Amazonas region of Peru

Since the 12th of January, there have been 40 cases of Bartenellosis (Oroya fever) reported in the Amazonas Region. Bartonella bacilliformis bacteria is considered the most deadly bartonella to date, with a death rate of up to 90% during the acute phase. This bacteria is transmitted by the bite of the sand fly. Travellers to this region can reduce their risk of exposure to this infection by taking all necessary precautions to avoid sand fly bites (see leishmaniasis in disease library for how to avoid sand fly bites).
