Outbreak of plague in Madagascar reaches epidemic level

The initial outbreak of plague has now expanded to 5 remote districts of the 112 districts in Madagascar. So far, 39 people have died and 86 have been infected. Apparently, nearly all of the cases have the pneumonic (pulmonary/lung) form of the disease that is both highly contagious and highly lethal. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to plague by taking all necessary measures to avoid flea bites in areas where plague commonly occurs and avoid close contact with ill persons who are coughing.
