Outbreak of Salmonella in Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia

At least 40 people developed a gastro-intestinal illness after consuming shawarma in a tent near the shopping center “Mercury” on Leninsky Prospekt. Many were hospitalized with 2 people in intensive care. Salmonella bacteria were isolated from 9 cases.

Consuming food or beverages from street vendors can result in serious intestinal illness. Infections with salmonella bacteria can cause fever, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps that can be mild to severe. Most people recover within 4 to 7 days without any special treatment other than fluids to prevent dehydration. Travellers can reduce the risk of acquiring salmonella infections by following food and water precautions.
