Outbreak of salmonellosis kills 1 person and infects several in two countries

An outbreak of salmonellosis (food borne intoxication) has resulted in 1 death in England and additional illness in several countries. The same strain of salmonella bacteria has infected 30 people in England and Wales, 4 in Ireland, 1 in Northern Ireland and 15 in Germany. While investigations are on-going to identify the source of the epidemic, watermelon is suspected as a possible vehicle for the infections.

Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to salmonella infection (as well as other food borne intoxication) by carefully observing food and water precautions while travelling.
