Outbreak of Shigella bacteria in Lubbock, Texas, USA

Health authorities have identified 37 cases of infection with Shigella bacteria in an outbreak that began in September in schools and daycare centres. Usually, there are only a few cases per month.

Food and water that are contaminated with human waste from infected persons is a common source for the bacteria that cause dysentery (shigellosis). This infection can also be spread from person to person. Travellers should always exercise caution and follow strict water and food precautions while travelling. Transmission from person to person occurs due to poor personal hygiene.
