Over 1,000 cases of leishmaniasis reported in Honduras

Health authorities have reported over 1,000 cases of leishmaniasis in Honduras. The infection that affects the skin occurs in Choluteca in Valle Province, while the strain that affects the skin, nose and mouth occurs in El Paraíso, Olancho, Yoro, Atlántida, Santa Bárbara, Comayagua and the mountainous parts of Cortés. Travellers to these regions can reduce their risk of exposure to leishmaniasis by taking all necessary precautions to avoid sand fly bites.
