Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issues diphtheria alert

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO, World Health Organization Office for the Americas) has noted an increasing number of reported cases of diphtheria in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela during the past 3 years. PAHO has urged all countries to maintain high levels of immunization against diphtheria.

Advice For Travellers

While the risk of exposure is still very low, all travellers are reminded that outbreaks of the highly contagious diphtheria can occur almost anywhere in the world at any time. Travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to the highly contagious diphtheria by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including diphtheria (DPT), are up-to-date prior to travelling.
