Papua New Guinea - Civil unrest

Today there were reports of violence, which began on and around the campus of the University of PNG and spread to other areas of the country. There are conflicting reports of police shooting directly at student protesters.

In Lae, Goroka, Mt. Hagen, and throughout Port Moresby (including Gerehu and Hahola Markets and outside the Port Moresby General Hospital), there were reports of protests with rioting and looting in some areas. Local transportation may still be affected.

Advice

Due to allegations of government corruption, civil unrest has increased recently, and students on the campus have been protesting and boycotting classes for the past five weeks.

Limit travel around Port Moresby and Lae. Avoid large crowds and protests. Exercise caution with respect to personal safety and security.
