Pertussis (whooping cough) cases continue to increase in Illinois, USA

So far in 2012, a total of over 1,200 cases of pertussis (whooping cough) have been recorded in Illinois. To help curb the spread of this infection, all sixth and ninth grade students will be required to show proof of receiving Tdap vaccination against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis.

Travellers are reminded that outbreaks of highly contagious pertussis (whooping cough) can occur anywhere in the world at any time. Travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to this disease by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including pertussis, are up-to-date prior to travelling.
