Phuket, Thailand, has high concentration of dengue fever cases

There have been more than 1,300 people infected with dengue fever in Phuket since January this year – double the amount of infections over the same period of time as last year. Although the total number of cases is not excessive, based on the population of the area, there is a high concentration of dengue fever cases in this region. There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
