Physicians in Virginia, USA, warned about Lyme Disease

Physicians in Virginia have been reminded by health authorities to be aware of increases in patients with Lyme Disease. In 2013, there were 1,307 confirmed and probable cases of Lyme disease, more than in any previous year. Increases are expected this year as well.

Travellers in areas where Lyme disease occurs can reduce their risk of exposure to this disease by avoiding tick bites, whenever possible, especially when hiking or camping in fields, woods and forests. Examining the skin daily for ticks and prompt removal of an attached tick will help to reduce the risk of infection.
