Plague deaths reported in Befotaka Atsimo, Madagascar

Health authorities have reported a total of 31 deaths due to bubonic plague in 2 adjacent communities in the southern district of Befotaka Atsimo. Recent bush fires have driven plague carrying rodents into villages and contact with humans.

Advice For Travellers

While the risk of exposure for the general traveller is very low, the risk can be higher for campers and hikers that may come in contact with rodents that carry plague. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to plague by taking all necessary measures to avoid flea bites in areas where plague commonly occurs.
