Police Deployed to Ethiopian Universities

Federal police have been deployed to universities across Ethiopia to control the ethnic violence that has led to the deaths of seven students in the past three months. There are reports that some students have been held hostage, denied access to meals and dormitories, and harassed and intimidated.

In Ethiopia, there is severe tension among the various ethnic groups. The three most dominant groups in the country are the Amhara, Oromo, and Tigray, and relations among these groups have become increasingly strained. In October, protests erupted when the government pulled the security detail of a prominent activist, and 86 people were killed.
