Polio - Delhi, India

The World Health Organisation (WHO) environmental surveillance program (National Polio Surveillance Project) has isolated the the polio virus from samples taken from Delhi's sewage system. While this finding does not indicate that an outbreak of polio is occurring, it is a cause for concern. Although Delhi did not report any polio case last year, authorities have increased surveillance and immunisation of susceptible children.

Travellers to this area should be aware that if there is polio virus circulating in the environment then there is a risk of exposure and possible infection.

Please refer to the GHNN Diseases Health Library for more information on exposure to and prevention of Polio.
