Polio in Afghanistan and Pakistan - update

In Afghanistan, 1 new case of polio has been reported in Kandahar province, bringing the total number of infected to 10 this year.

In Pakistan, there have been no new polio infections, but the polio virus was identified in 6 samples taken from the environment. The virus was found in Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan provinces. The total number of infected persons remains unchanged at 5 this year.

Advice

Travellers in any country that reports cases of polio can reduce their risk of exposure to poliovirus by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including polio, are up-to-date prior to travelling. Travellers who are visiting infected areas for more than 4 weeks should receive an additional dose of oral polio vaccine or inactivated polio vaccine within 4 weeks to 12 months before travelling.
