Polio transmission persists in Pakistan; polio workers killed

Pakistan is one of 3 countries where new cases of polio continue to be reported. Transmission of the virus appears to occur in three groups of districts: Karachi City, a group of districts in Balochistan Province, and districts in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Attempts to control this disease have been hamperred by recurrent deadly attacks on workers in the vaccination campaigns. In the latest in a series of deadly assaults on vaccination teams, armed men killed three health workers taking part in a polio-vaccination drive.

Travellers in any country that reports cases of polio can reduce their risk of exposure to polio virus by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including polio, are up-to-date prior to travelling.
