Polio Warning - Pakistan

Routine screening of water supplies by the World Health Organization Polio Eradication Program has revealed the presence of the polio virus in the Gulbahar Canal that supplies fresh water to Peshawar and surrounding villages. The sampling has also detected the presence of the polio virus in water supplied to Rawalpindi, Multan, Karachi and Quetta. Water samples from Lahore were negative for the virus.

Travellers to this region should be aware of the possible risk of exposure to polio and ensure that their childhood vaccinations (including polio Immunization) are up-to-date.
