Political situation in Burundi remains tense

In continuing clashes today in Bujumbura, Burundi, a soldier was shot and killed by an intelligence officer and at least nine people were injured. Protests continue against the president standing for a third term in October elections.

The authorities have already cut mobile access to several social networks and messaging applications including Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp, which have been used to coordinate protests.

More than 22,000 Burundians have crossed into Rwanda to avoid the violence and the intimidation by youth militia.
