Political tensions in Nicaragua
On July 8, riot police in Managua, Nicaragua, clashed with protesters demanding fair elections in 2016. Protesters pushed against a line of riot police, and police responding by beating demonstrators and also journalists.
Travellers should be aware of political tensions that are ongoing leading up to 2016 elections. There is a weekly protest in Managua outside the electoral council against the ruling Sandinista National Liberation Front to demand a change in elections rules. To minimize safety risk, always avoid large public gatherings and protests. In some countries, it is illegal for foreigners to participate in demonstrations.
