Possible deaths due to chikungunya in Yucatan, Mexico

There are reports of 2 deaths that may have been caused by the chikungunya fever virus. One death occurred in Sitilpech, Izamal, and one in San Isidro Kuxub, Baca.

Death due to infection with the chikungunya virus is rare. Any death due to this virus indicates that there may be many cases of infection in the community.

All travellers to areas where chikungunya fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported. Chikungunya virus infections may have long lasting health consequences.
