Possible outbreak of hepatitis E in Kangra, India

An outbreak of hepatitis E is suspected in the temple town of Kangra, in the state of Himachal Pradesh. So far, 55 patients were detected, including 37 children. Contaminated water supplies are suspected, but an investigation is underway.

Hepatitis E virus generally causes an infection with no or mild symptoms and usually resolves in 4-6 weeks with no special treatment. Since this virus is transmitted mostly through contaminated food or water, travellers can reduce the risk of exposure by following strict water and food safety precautions.
