Potential for civil unrest in Cambodia

On 16 November 2017, Cambodia’s Supreme Court is expected to make a ruling on whether to dissolve the country’s main opposition party, the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).

Advice

The government is suppressing potential protests ahead of this ruling, and authorities have ordered the creation of “standby working groups” to prevent civil unrest. There will most likely be heightened security procedures and presence in Phnom Penh around this time frame. Starting November 15, access to popular tourist sites, including the Royal Palace and riverside, may be impacted. Always minimize safety risk by avoiding political gatherings or demonstrations, where violence can erupt unexpectedly and quickly.
