Powerful 8.3 earthquake hits Chile and triggers tsunami warning

A strong 8.3-magnitude earthquake hit Chile at 19:54 (7:54 pm) local time about 228 kilometers north-northwest of Santiago. Strong aftershocks followed and tsunami alarms sounded in Valparaiso.

A tsunami watch has been issued by Chile’s national emergency agency and evacuations have been ordered along the coast from Arica to Puerto Aysen.

A tsunami watch has also been issued for Hawaii. If tsunami waves affect Hawaii, the estimated time would be 02:28 am on Thursday, local time.

Dangerous waves are possible along the coast of Chile and Peru.

The National Tsunami Warning Centre also said waves could hit British Columbia, Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California.
