Prepared salads cause of food poisoning outbreak in Stavropol, Russia

Prepared salads are thought to be the cause of an outbreak of food poisoning affecting 166 people in the last week. The ill persons include 32 children. A total of 128 were hospitalized. Salmonella bacteria appear to be the contaminating agent. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to the many germs that cause intestinal illness (such as cholera, E.coli, salmonella, and many viruses) by avoiding consumption of contaminated food and water (especially when sold by street vendors) and by practising careful personal hygiene with frequent hand washing.
