Protest Activities in Hong Kong, Weekend of 17-18 August - Update

The following protests may occur over the weekend of 17-18 August in Hong Kong:

  • Large scale demonstrations are planned by students and pro-democracy activists over the weekend.
  • University student groups and other organizations demonstrated in central Hong Kong Island on Friday evening, 16 August.
  • A march is expected on both the island side and the Kowloon Peninsula side on Saturday, 17 August.
  • A pro-democracy group plans to hold a demonstration in the central part of Hong Kong Island on Sunday, 18 August. However, police have indicated that they will only approve an event lasting from 10 a.m. and 11 p.m. The police offer was rejected and a confrontation with police may occur.
  • On Saturday afternoon, 17 August, supporters of the Hong Kong government and police are also planning a large-scale counter-demonstration to criticize violence in recent protests and call for efforts to restore order in the territory.
