Protesters arrested and injured in the Maldives.

Several hundred demonstrators in the Maldives have been protesting against rising commodity prices in the country, and to demand that president Mohamed Nasheed step down. Police have arrested more than 300 people and many have been injured since demonstrations began almost a week ago.

Travellers should be aware of the current risk of unrest in the Maldives and avoid political demonstrations and public gatherings as they can become violent with little warning.
