Protests and hostage situation in Armenia

Armenia police have exchanged gunfire with a group who stormed a police building on July 17 and took hostages. The protesters are demanding that all political prisoners be released and that the president resign. Police have clashed with thousands of protesters who support the hostage takers.

Police have now issued an ultimatum to those holding the police station to surrender by 13:00 (GMT).

Advice For Travellers

Dozens were injured in overnight clashes, and 26 people were arrested after authorities broke up a rally near the police station.

Given the ultimatum by police, the situation could escalate. Completely avoid the area in the vicinity of the Erebuni Police station (in the south of Yerevan). Follow any directions given by the local authorities.
