Protests and potential for violence in Burundi leading up to elections

Travellers should be aware there is political tension in the run-up to Burundi’s presidential election. Today about a thousand opposition protesters were in the streets to oppose a third term for the incumbent president. Police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowd.

Elections are scheduled to take place between the end of May and August 2015. The pre-election fear of violence has already caused about 8,000 Burundians to leave Burundi and seek refuge in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
