Protests in Algiers called for January 16 and 17

Demonstrations and marches are planned in Algiers on 16 January at about 1:30 pm after Friday prayers. In one location participants will gather in the Mohamed Belouzdad area and proceed toward Parliament. A second protest will be in the vicinity of Place de 1er Mai, and a third protest will be in the area of Al-Wafa bi Al-Ahd in Kouba. These protests are in response to inflammatory cartoons that are seen to be insulting to Islam.

On January 17, a sit-in is scheduled at the Grande Poste in central Algiers to protest shale gas exploration.

These demonstrations are expected to be peaceful, however, to minimize safety risk, avoid these areas since even peaceful protests can quickly and unexpectedly become violent.
