Protests in Baghdad, Iraq, result in state of emergency declaration

Hundreds of supporters of Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr stormed the Green Zone and entered the parliament building to protest the failure of Iraqi lawmakers to approve new ministers. Legislators failed to act to approve the replacement of party affiliated ministers with technically competent persons. A state of emergency has been declared in Baghdad.

Advice For Travellers

Although the take-over of Parliament by the protesters has been peaceful so far, there is a potential for violent confrontations. Travellers should avoid the areas around the location of the protests.
