Protests in Togo April 2018

The political opposition has called a two-day protest beginning April 11. Police have already used tear gas to disperse protesters in Lome and other towns across Togo. The opposition coalition has been calling for the resignation of the president since August 2017 and for term limits and electoral reform. The incumbent president has been in office since 2005.

Advice

The government has warned that protests violate the terms of a mediation agreement. Avoid areas of protests due to the risk of violence. Police have been known to arrest demonstrators, use excessive force to disperse crowds, and disrupt communications during times of protests. Public bus, private taxi services, and road travel may also be disrupted.
