Province in Indonesia bans women from entertainment venues after 11 pm

In an effort to “reduce sexual violence,” Indonesia’s Aceh Province has banned women from entertainment venues, such as internet cafes, tourist sites, sports facilities after 23:00 (11:00 pm) unless accompanied by a husband or male family member.

Advice For Travellers

Women travellers should be aware that the province's morality police can detain a woman for being in an entertainment venue after 23:00 (11 pm). The Aceh Province is located at the northern end of Sumatra and is the only Indonesian province that implements Islamic law.

Recently, unmarried men and women were banned from riding together on a motorbike in one of the province's districts. Also, women are only allowed to ride motorbikes side-saddle.
