Rainy season expected to increase dengue fever and chikungunya cases in Honduras

The start of the rainy season is expected to increase the mosquito population and, as a result, the number of cases of dengue fever and chikungunya. The Comayagua department is already reporting an increase in both dengue fever and chikungunya cases compared to the same time period last year (555 dengue fever cases and 273 dengue fever cases).

Advice For Travellers

Travellers to areas where both the dengue fever and chikungunya fever viruses are active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with these infections do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases of both diseases in the community than the reports indicate.
