Rare case of Hantavirus in Texas, USA

Health authorities have reported a rare case of hantavirus in the Golden Crescent area of the central coast. In 2014, only 5 cases occurred in the state. Regardless, authorities have advised to public to take precautions to avoid contact with rats.

Dust, food, and hands that are contaminated with the dried urine and excreta of infected rodents are the main source of hantaviruses. When the dust is stirred up during cleaning or working in rodent-infested places, people inhale the virus and become infected. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to hantavirus infection by avoiding situations that create dust in rodent infected areas.
