Rare outbreak of trypanosomiasis from contaminated food in Pará, Brazil

There are reports of an outbreak of Chagas disease in Abaetetuba in the state of Pará. The disease has been diagnosed in 11 people who are linked to the consumption of acai which is a palm that is cultivated for fruit, juice or hearts of palm. A man who grinds up the palm and 2 of his family are infected. This is an unusual means of infection with the parasite that causes Chagas disease and the risk to travellers is very low. Travellers should only consume commercially prepared palm products, such as hearts of palm.
