Record number of dengue fever cases in Brazil

With almost one and one-half million cases of dengue fever this year, Brazil has registered the highest ever number of cases since 1990 when reporting of this illness began. Compared to last year at this time, there are three times the number of cases nationwide. Eighteen states have recorded epidemic levels of this disease in many of their municipalities. Goiás and São Paulo have the highest rates of dengue infection.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
