Renewed bloodshed in Lebanon related to ethnic conflicts in Syria

Tensions between the Alawite minority loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and members of the majority Sunni community who support the 19-month-old uprising increased when gunmen opened fire on the house of a Sunni leader in Tripoli. Meanwhile, 3 people were killed on Sunday when fighting broke out in the Lebanese coastal city of Sidon between followers of a Sunni Salafist preacher and supporters of the Lebanese Shi'ite guerrilla movement Hezbollah. Given the volatility fo the situation in Lebanon, travellers should exercise caution and consider postponing their visit to this country. Some countries advise their citizens to avoid all travel to Tripoli and the northern parts of the country.
