Reported malaria cases almost double in Venezuela this year

In just one week in mid-August, there were reports of 1,287 cases of malaria, bringing the total for this year to more than 52,000 reported cases (almost double the number recorded for the same time period last year). If the present trends continue, the number of cases by the end of this year will be the highest in the past 70 years. Bolivar is the most affected state. Travellers to any region where malaria transmission is occurring can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Anti-malaria medication is recommended.
