Reported malaria cases decrease in Cambodia

Health officials in Cambodia have noted a significant reduction in the number of malaria cases reported this year. To date, there have been 13,700 reported cases in the first five months of this year, compared to 31,100 cases reported in the same time period last year. The number of deaths due to this disease have decreased as well to a total of 4. Officials have attributed the decline to the widespread distribution of mosquito nets and an intense public awareness campaign.

With a few exceptions, malaria is found throughout Cambodia. Although there are fewer cases reported, travellers should still take all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Anti-malaria medication is recommended for most, but not all itineraries.
