Residents fear diarrhea outbreak after cyclone in India could be cholera

About 150 people have become ill with acute diarrheal disease in Chennai after Cyclone Vardah came through the area. Currently there have only been three people suspected of having cholera but residents are starting to take precautions in case the outbreak is indeed cholera. Officials are starting to advise people from drinking the tap water in Taramani.

All travellers can minimize the risk of exposure to this disease. Strictly observe all food and water precautions in any area where there is cholera. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.
