Respiratory virus EV-D68 continues spreading across USA

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the past few days, 3 more states have reported cases of the unusual respiratory virus called EV-D68. The total number of states reporting cases of this infection has reached 22 and include Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington.

The actual number of cases of EV-D68 is not known as people infected with this virus may not seek medical care and laboratory tests are not routinely done. Infections are occurring mostly in children, and EV-D68 can cause mild to severe respiratory illness. Mild symptoms may include fever, runny nose, sneezing, cough, and body and muscle aches. Most of the children who were very ill have had pre-existing asthma or wheezing.

The same precautions for flu (influenza), e.g., maintaining a small distance (1 meter) from a person with a respiratory illness and frequent hand washing, will help reduce the risk of infection.
