Rift Valley Fever outbreak in Mauritania

The Ministry of Health has reported as many as 15 or 16 suspected cases of Rift Valley Fever in the municipality of Nouakchott. Four of the patients have died.

While this infection mainly affects animals, humans caring for sick animals can become infected.

Human infections result from direct or indirect contact with the blood or organs of infected animals during slaughtering or butchering, assisting with animal births, conducting veterinary procedures, or from the disposal of carcasses or fetuses. Humans may also become infected with this viurs by ingesting the unpasteurized or uncooked milk of infected animals. Infections have also resulted from the bites of infected mosquitoes.
