Rift Valley Fever Outbreak in South Sudan Continues

Eight newly-identified human cases of Rift Valley Fever have been identified in the East Lakes state. A total of 40 cases and four deaths have been reported from Yirol East and Yirol West. The virus continues to affect livestock in the outbreak area.

Advice

Human infections result from direct or indirect contact with the blood or organs of infected animals during slaughtering or butchering, assisting with animal births, conducting veterinary procedures, or from the disposal of carcasses or fetuses. Humans may also become infected with Rift Valley Fever by ingesting the unpasteurized or uncooked milk of infected animals. Infections have also resulted from the bites of infected mosquitoes.
